About Joyce Ackerman, PHR

Horty bean counter since 1996.

Joyce is our people person. Not only does she make sure that our Horty team is happy and productive at work…she helps our clients recruit and develop their talent, too. When Joyce isn't helping you build a better team, she's probably flying off to a faraway land to learn about a new culture, collect Guatemalan goodies and share them with friends. She's also enjoys preparing meals with fresh food, using her garden as inspiration for culinary artistry.

She built the Horty HR consulting service from the ground up in 1996, and our clients count on Joyce to help them maximize their financial services staff. From recruitment support to salary surveys and creation of policies and procedures, Joyce makes sure the HR environment is efficient and effective for your people…and your business.

Why Joyce works with us:

Joyce attended Neumann College, where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree Cum Laude. She has also attended Villanova University for Professional Human Resource Management, and the University of Colorado National School of Human Resources.

About Greg Crump, Director, CPA, DABFA

Horty bean counter since 1986.

Before Greg was a bean counter he worked at the Rusty Rudder at the Delaware beach in the summers. Which explains his sense of humor…serving food and drink at a popular summertime watering hole at the beach gives a person some interesting perspectives. Enough said. Here at Horty, Greg serves up audits, tax services and consulting to his "customers."

Greg is a member of the American Institute of Public Accountants, Delaware State Society of Accountants, National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, and the Institute of Business Appraisers. He's also a member of National Homebuilders Association. Greg offers our clients litigation support services and traditional accounting services for the construction and real estate development industries.

About John Fay, Director, CPA

Horty bean counter since 2001.

John is the Tax Man. Seriously folks. He's been all about it for over 25 years, and he's met, talked to or prepared the returns for every one of our clients. When he's not the tax man he likes to get outside and play golf, ride a bike or chop some wood…in the Poconos.

When he's in the office and not chopping wood or riding his bike, he's working with our clients on both traditional accounting services and tax planning and compliance. On the consulting side of the business, John provides assistance with mergers and acquisitions, 1031 exchanges and business succession planning.

John is a member Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), Wilmington West Rotary Club Member, and he's a member of the audit committee for the Luther House Inc. and St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Unionville, Pennsylvania.

About Brian Stratton

Horty bean counter since 2006.

Step aside folks, the tax man has arrived. Brian Stratton joined us with a history of tax planning and strategy. But don’t let that career seriousness worry you – Brian likes to play, too. Having gone to school in Philadelphia, he’s a big Phillies fan, and he also holds season tickets for the Eagles (so if you find him toiling away on your tax strategy you might want to bring him a cup of coffee and make a new friend).

You may think he’s just a sporty casual guy. When it comes to the bottom line, however, this bean counter is all work and no play. Brian offers our clients direction on how to make their “play-by-play” tax strategy a positive experience. And he’s all about the details – we count on Brian for tax research and planning for clients from many different industries. This keeps work interesting:  “I like to figure out what’s new, what’s necessary, and how that can work best for our clients,” he says. He also provides tax review services for the firm, working internally with clients in all of our market segments.

Brian attended college at Temple University; graduating in May 2000 Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 in accounting.  He’s a member of the Delaware Society of CPAs and also the AICPA and PICPA.

About Mike Easton, CPA

Horty bean counter since 1999.

Okay, here's the music man. Mike Easton describes himself as an "avid" music lover. He's seen all the famous rockers - from The Stones to The Who and beyond. Looking for a concert buddy? Ask Mike. Maybe he'll drive to the show in his 1968 GTO.

Mike Easton is a member of the AICPA and the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants.

When Mike isn't at a concert or enjoying outdoor activities with his family, he's helping Horty clients with accounting and auditing issues, and taking a look at their tax situation. He also enjoys consulting projects where forensics, mergers and acquisitions and litigation support are needed.

About Tom Gilligan, Director, CPA, CVA, CFE, DABFA

Horty bean counter since 1977.

Tom Gilligan's claim to fame comes from his original interview at Horty & Horty with Peter Horty. "I really struggled with the questions and they still took a chance on me -- I'm still here 30 years later," he says with a chuckle. His long history with the firm is punctuated by the successful businesses he's watched grow from the ground up. And once he's done the counting, he adds up the bogeys on the golf course or plays basketball.

Tom is a member of the AICPA, DSCPA, the PICPA, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Accounting.

And Tom helps our Horty clients with mergers and acquisitions, high-level tax planning, and financial statements. He provides consulting on bonding issues, bank negotiations, as well as due diligence projects and succession planning. He also provides leadership in our business valuation practice.

About Mike Malchione, Director, CPA

Horty bean counter since 1988.

Mike Malchione might look like the cerebral type. That's because he is, graduating at the top of his class and Suma Cum Laude. Right after that, he came to work for us and we put that intellect to work for our clients. He's a family guy, and he enjoys travel and heading to the beach to work on his tan.

When he's not having fun in the sun, or looking for the next beach to visit, he's working within his affiliations and memberships in the AICPA, Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Delaware Society of CPAs, and the Caesar Rodney Rotary Club.

Mike Malchione serves our clients in the construction industry with his expertise in auditing services, tax services and traditional accounting…sprinkled with a few consulting gigs along the way. He also works with clients in the real estate development, manufacturing and professional services industries.

About Andy Patterson, Director, CPA

Horty bean counter since 1993.

Andy is our exemplary bean counter, a Philadelphia Eagles football fan (he actually bleeds green), and a former marathon man. Really, he was. Just ask him.

At Horty, Andy handles traditional audit and accounting services for our clients, tax planning, business valuations and forensic and internal control studies. Andy offers consulting and advice on structuring transactions to minimize tax, improve clients' creditworthiness, finance decisions and planning for succession of business owners.

Andy is a member of the AICPA, Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA). He's a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), and serves as a Board member for the Board of Chester County Disability Services, (an organization that encourages the independence of mentally and physically disabled people in the community).

Andy grew up in Pennsylvania and came to the firm through recruitment efforts at West Chester University. He is married to Wendy and has three daughters, Naomi, Sadie and Natalie.

About Doug Phillips, Director, CPA

Horty bean counter since 1983.

He is, by his own admission, a professional numbers cruncher. When he's not crunching the numbers, he likes to get outside and do something that requires physical…but not necessarily intellectual…labor. He enjoys traveling, and a favorite destination is San Diego

Our professional numbers cruncher also enjoys getting out and networking. So, when he's not crunching numbers, he can be found attending to his memberships in the AICPA, the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants, Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants, and the American College of Forensic Examiners. Or he's attending meetings for the State Board of Accountancy, as Chair of the Finance Committee Board of United Way or for various not-for-profits that he's involved with.

Doug Phillips offers Horty clients in the gaming, housing and construction and development businesses traditional accounting services. And he has specialties: forensic accounting and auditing. Primarily, though he's the generalist - working as an accounting partner with principals in closely-held businesses.
